I have spent the last year and several months developing a content management in PHP. It technically was finished a long time ago, and I continued to go back and revise it, a few times from the ground up.

I originally intended to use this for personal sites here and there, as most other CMS’ I’ve used were large, bloated, and very resource intensive ( Joomla for example ). Though I loved Joomla, I just can’t afford to use it anymore with more than one site on VPS hosting.

The CMS I made now is kind of like a mixture between Joomla, WordPress and Drupal; all the best rolled into one much smaller package. So far from testing, it runs faster than either of the three listed and has most all the same features. It can be extended with components and plugins very easily ( like Joomla, but much, much easier ), supports SEF out of the box with complete control over URL structure, etc. It has alot of useful features I didn’t find in either package as well; resources to create and maintain backups of site settings and database, etc.

I have spent so much time optimizing ( about the last 6 months on optimizing alone ) and page caching. A cached page generates one database query by default, a non cached page generates two ( this is before or after logging in ).

Not to mention, the CMS by default has alot of Ajaxed features. The admin ( in which you can rename and relocate for security ) has alot of nice Ajax for managing, adding pages, etc. It also has a forum component that natively integrates with the CMS, which too uses some good Ajax implementation.

So far it runs REALLY good, I am thoroughly impressed with the final product. My question is, since I am in need of money and don’t want to sell the script ( it WILL be open source ), what is the best way to make a profit from Open Source without making it a commercial product? Do ads like Adsense really do any good? Those interested probably will know exactly what the ads are and definetly won’t click them, so how else can you make money from such a product?

I have been a customer of BlueHost for a long time, but with the rise of user submitted video content coupled with the lack of the ffmpeg module I am forced to look elsewhere for hosting providers…

I have been researching web hosts that offer the ffmpeg module for video conversion to flv. In your opinion, which webhost is the highest quality in terms of price, up-time, speed, bandwidth, and file storage space in a shared hosting environment?

Please keep in mind that ffmpeg is necessary to the completion of my website…

I spoke to support @ godaddy…they don’t support ffmpeg…so, yeah – don’t trust you.

How much are they? The ones that big video hosting companies use like youtube.com justin.tv veoh.com dailymotion.com? Do they run them themselves or do they buy it off a company?

I have purchased a domain at godaddy.com. It comes with free shared hosting. Will there be advertisements on the site? If so, how can I host it so there won’t be any?

Is buying a domain enough? Or do I need to host it somewhere? What does hosting mean?

In Microsoft Publisher I have developed my website with video and text. On each page I have changed the "Web Page Options" so it has the description and keywords to help people find the site through search engines. Then I have saved it under "Publish to the Web…" and I assume I will later upload that to the hosting server? I am not sure how I load the site to the web, how the hosting works, etc.

I need your help understand the role hosting plays, how that works, and its relationship with advertising. I want no ads on the site. Any further comments on what to do in Microsoft Publisher are appreciated.

And as for the video in Publisher, I first loaded the wmv file to YouTube and pasted the embed code in a box called "HTML Code Fragment" in Publisher.

Dedicated servers are supposed to be for high-demand bandwidth needs, but if that’s the case, then how come shared hosting like godaddy.com gives me 15,000GB of bandwidth and 1,500GB of storage every month for less than six dollars a month, while dedicated servers like theplanet.com charge me for only 750GB of bandwidth and 512MB of data storage?

That doesn’t make a single bit of sense.

i am looking or web hosting which can hold up to 2000 people online at a time , ryt now i am on bluehost and hold up to 600 people online before the site goes down

i have tried vps and dedicated server as well , vps 768mb ram and could hold only 300ppl and dedicated 2gb ram only 500 , so far shared working best and cheapppp for me but give me some ideas…

I have a list of current movies hosted on Rapidshare (not mine, just those I’ve found).

For those of you who may not know, Rapidshare is a file sharing service. Many of these files aren’t exactly "legal".
